City government provides fire and police protection, streets and street maintenance, sewer and water treatment and collection systems, building permit activities, parks and recreation activities. It is also responsible for land use planning within the city limits and urban growth boundaries. Hines operates a municipal court for adjudication of traffic and ordinance violations.
Hines is the home of Hines Middle School, Valley Golf Club, US Forest Service, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Harney Electric Cooperative, Hines Post Office, a number of churches and various businesses.
In accordance with ORS 192.630, City of Hines will make a good faith
effort to provide accommodations for any person desiring to attend
a public meeting, if the request is made at least 48 hours in advance
of the meeting time. The meeting room is physically accessible to
persons with mobility devices; a sign language or foreign language
interpreter may be available, with advance notice.
Hines Planning Commission continues to have open seats for civic-
minded residents who have a desire to serve the City of Hines in a
very part-time volunteer capacity. Two of the members may be non-
residents, so county and Burns residents may also apply. Meetings
are held only on an as-needed basis, two or three times per year,
usually for about an hour at a time. Please send a letter of interest
with a brief description of your background and any related planning
